Nord Stream 2 | Project description and status

Nord Stream 2 is an international project for construction of a pipeline from Russia to Germany via the Baltic Sea, providing reliable and sustainable gas supplies to the European market. Nord Stream 2 AG, a company established for planning, construction and subsequent operation of the Nord Stream 2 Pipeline, is based in Zug, Switzerland, and owned by Public Joint Stock Company (PJSC) Gazprom.

Kvaerner LLC (Kvaerner’s subsidiary for operations in Russia) is a contract partner for the works related to the construction of the Pig Trap Area Landfall Russia. Kvaerner LLC is executing the work in cooperation with local subcontractors and international suppliers. The construction site is located in the area between Ust-Luga harbor and Kingisepp in the Kingisepp District, which is approximately 160 km south of Saint Petersburg.

The scope of Kvaerner LLC's contract consists mainly of civil works, installation of piping and valves for the pipe cleaning Pipeline Inspection Gauge (PIG) launcher and receiver units, welding and field joint coating of approximately 2 off two kilometers of adjacent pipelines onshore, as well as construction of permanent buildings for operation of the Pig Trap Area. Design responsibility of the installations is with Nord Stream 2 AG.

As per end of January 2019, Kvaerner LLC own employees make out 40 persons located at the construction site, while subcontractor’s personnel, performing civil, mechanical and piping works is around 250. In addition, Kvaerner has employees working on the project located in Moscow, Oslo (Norway) and at various subcontractors’ fabrication facilities. According to the manpower forecast, the on-site manpower may peak at 450 persons during spring and summer 2019.

As usual when cooperating with international EPC subcontractors, Kvaerner is providing its services for Nord Stream 2 pipeline with strong dedication to the principles of HSSE, quality and efficiency.

Furthermore, this project is carried out in alignment of the IFC framework, setting strict requirements for environmental impact, sustainability, integrity and HSES.
