Kvaerner’s EPC project for the Arkutun-Dagi platform Berkut has been completed.

On 25 May 2012, Exxon Neftegas Limited announced, on behalf of the Sakhalin-1 Consortium, the completion of the gravity-based structure (GBS) for the Arkutun-Dagi platform Berkut, which will be located offshore north-east Sakhalin. Kvaerner has been responsible for the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) of the GBS.

“Completion of the gravity-based structure is another significant milestone for Sakhalin-1 and brings us one step closer to production start-up from the project’s third field,” said Jim Flood, Chairman of Exxon Neftegas Limited. “The successful development of the Arkutun-Dagi field will strengthen Russia’s position as one of the leading countries developing oil and gas deposits offshore and onshore in challenging Actic and sub-Arctic conditions.”

The GBS will be towed away from the construction site in early June and installed in the Arkutun-Dagi field as the base for the Berkut, an ice-resistant fixed platform designed to safely operate year-round in a seismically active area and able to withstand winter temperatures of -44 °C , waves up to 18 metres high and sea ice up to two metres thick.

Kvaerner is a leader in marine concrete structures (GBS) for oil and gas field developments, with more than 40 years of international concrete experience, as a lead contractor in more than 20 major concrete projects world wide. Kvaerner’s concrete GBS structures provide numerous potential benefits, including integrated oil storage, significant local content, and robustness to meet Arctic environmental challenges. In addition, concrete structures support large topside weight, require minimum maintenance and have low lifecycle cost.
